Japanese pianist Tomoe Kawabata has become a leading authority on the performance of contemporary Japanese music. She is currently completing a PhD in the piano music of Akio Yashiro and Akira Miyoshi at the Elder Conservatorium of Music of Adelaide.
Tomoe attained her Masters degree from the Tokyo College of Music before moving to Australia in 2002. She undertook further studies at the Australian Institute of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music whilst continuing an active international performing career. She has appeared in concerts and festivals in Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan and as concerto soloist with such orchestras as the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Targu Mures State Philharmonic Orchestra, Sibiu Symphony Orchestra and “Dinu Lipatti” Philharmonic Orchestra in Europe.
Tomoe is committed to championing new music from her home country. She has performed the solo and chamber works of composers including Tōru Takemitsu, Akio Yashiro, Akira Miyoshi, Tomojirō Ikenouchi, Hisatada Otaka and Yoshio Hachimura.
